Team leader recognized as recipient of the John Coleman Award for leadership.

Working with the River Valley Prevention Coalition, DHS Students Against Underage Drinking Coalition members Chloe and Justin presented their project work on teen distracted driving issues at the 2011 Youth Celebration.

The event was held April 1 at the Russellville Hughes Center, as the teen coalitions from Pope and Yell Counties met to celebrate their accomplishments. DHS SAUD team leader Tanner received the John Coleman Exceptional Student award for his work. The award is given in recognition of John Coleman, who passed away recently, for his work with youth from the River Valley area.

Justin and Chloe provided examples of the following EAST projects created by DHS SAUD Coalition to develop awareness of the distracted driving issues.

  • Promotion of the Yell County 15th Judicial Drug Coalition Poster contest, open to students from the elementary, middle school and high school. A previous DHS EAST student won the contest and the winning poster design will be used by the Drug Coalition to bring awareness of the dangers of drug use.
  • Red Ribbon Week held in October, with all DHS students participating in the advisor door decorations contest. Mrs. Robinson's advisory won the contest and was provided with a pizza lunch.
  • “A Life Gone Forever” PSA against drinking and driving issues for TV broadcast with the Russellville Police. The final extended video will be used the week of prom to bring awareness against drinking and driving.
  • “Don't get InTEXTicated” week with approximately 300 students and parents signing pledges not to text and drive. The students utilized the All-State Thumbs Up promotion.
  • May promotion for prom Anti-Drinking Video and poster campaign about drinking/driving issues.

Chloe accepted the Teen Leadership Award on behalf of the DHS SAUD Coalition.
